<strong>Job Description<br><br></strong><strong>Job Purpose<br><br></strong>To provide efficient and effective technical support to the Science Department, ensuring that all laboratory resources, equipment, and materials are prepared and maintained to support the teaching and learning of Science across Key Stages 3, 4, and 5. The postholder will contribute to the safe and smooth running of all practical activities in Biology, Chemistry, and Physics lessons.<br><br><strong>Key Responsibilities<br><br></strong><ul><li> Practical Lesson Support</li><li>Prepare, set up, and clear away equipment, materials, and solutions for practical science lessons and demonstrations.</li><li>Support teachers during lessons, assisting with demonstrations and practical work as needed.</li><li>Trial and test new experiments and practical activities to ensure suitability and safety.</li><li>Provide technical advice and assistance to teaching staff and students on the use of laboratory equipment.</li><li> Health, Safety & Compliance</li><li>Ensure that all laboratory work complies with current Health & Safety regulations and school policies.</li><li>Maintain accurate Control of Substances Hazardous to Health and risk assessment documentation for all substances and procedures.</li><li>Promote safe working practices among students and staff.</li><li>Ensure proper storage, handling, and disposal of chemicals, specimens, and waste materials.</li><li>Keep laboratories, prep rooms, and storage areas clean, organised, and hazard-free.</li><li> Equipment & Resource Management</li><li>Maintain and monitor stock levels of consumables, chemicals, and equipment.</li><li>Carry out regular checks, maintenance, and calibration of laboratory apparatus.</li><li>Organise repairs or replacements of faulty equipment as required.</li><li>Maintain accurate inventories and assist with ordering and budget monitoring.</li><li> Administrative & Departmental Support</li><li>Assist in preparing teaching resources, displays, and revision materials.</li><li>Support departmental projects, open evenings, and extracurricular science activities.</li><li>Keep accurate records of experiments, risk assessments, and equipment use.</li><li>Liaise with suppliers and external contractors when required.</li><li> Student Support</li><li>Support students in developing practical skills and understanding laboratory procedures.</li><li>Promote a culture of curiosity, safety, and respect within the lab environment.</li><li>Occasionally supervise small groups during practical activities under teacher guidance.<br><br></li></ul><strong>Skills<br><br></strong><strong>Person Specification<br><br></strong><strong>Essential Criteria<br><br></strong><ul><li>A good standard of education in Science (e.g. A-levels or equivalent).</li><li>Experience of working in a laboratory or technical environment.</li><li>Sound understanding of Health & Safety procedures, including Control of Substances Hazardous to Health.</li><li>Strong organisational skills with attention to detail.</li><li>Ability to work independently and as part of a team.</li><li>Good communication skills and a positive, proactive attitude.<br><br></li></ul><strong>Desirable Criteria<br><br></strong><ul><li>A degree or technical qualification in a Science-related field.</li><li>Previous experience working in a school science department preferred but not essential</li><li>Familiarity with CLEAPSS guidance and school-based laboratory protocols.</li><li>Basic IT skills for record keeping and documentation.<br><br></li></ul><strong>GEMS Education is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of all of its students and staff.
