Summary

The Brooklyn Navy Yard Development Corporation (BNYDC) is a not-for-profit corporation that serves as the real estate developer and property manager of the Yard on behalf of its owner, the City of New York. BNYDC strives to provide an environment in which innovative companies can take root and grow.

Custodial laborers provide routine office and grounds cleaning necessary in maintaining the premises, various systems, buildings, physical structures and appurtenances.

Areas of Responsibility

  • Service, clean, and supply restrooms
  • Clean building floors & walls by sweeping, mopping, scrubbing, or vacuuming
  • Dispose of trash or waste materials
  • Follow procedures for the use of chemical cleaners and power cleaning equipment
  • Notify managers concerning the need for major repairs or additions to building operating systems
  • Maintain lawns and shrubbery using mowers and trimmers
  • Remove snow from sidewalks, driveways, or parking areas, using snowplows, snow blowers, or snow shovels, or spread snow melting chemicals
  • Set up and breakdown decorations, tables, chairs, scaffolding, etc. for meetings and events
  • Move heavy furniture and equipment either manually or by using hand trucks
  • Spray insecticides or fumigants to prevent insect or rodent infestation
  • Drive vans, industrial trucks, or other vehicles as needed
  • Prepares work sites as instructed
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned

Required Skills and Abilities

  • Strong floor care experience, including stripping & waxing, with use of equipment such as a scrubber, side-by-side, carpet extractor, etc.
  • Experience operating a Kaivac machine
  • Snow removal experience using equipment such as a blower, plow, salt, etc.
  • Detail cleaning experience, including low and high dusting
  • Experience setting up for events, such as assembling or moving furniture, preferred

Qualifications

  • 1+ years of relevant work experience as a custodian, janitor, porter, etc.
  • Valid driver’s license required
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds
  • Must be able to work weekends and evenings (until 11pm) as needed
